The 43rd session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee started in Baku yesterday, on July 1.
UNESCO Director General Audrey Azoulay confirmed that she intends to take part in the international conference on cultural heritage, which will be held in Samarkand in August this year, Sputnik Uzbekistan reports.
This became known following the negotiations of a delegation from Uzbekistan headed by Deputy Prime Minister Aziz Abdukhakimov with UNESCO Director General Audrey Azoulay, Director of the World Heritage Center Mechtild Rossler, as well as representatives of the member countries of the World Heritage Committee.
It should be kept in mind that last year UNESCO criticized the disorderly construction in Samarkand: experts revealed corruption and falsification of documents during the construction of new facilities.
The 43rd session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee started in Baku yesterday, on July 1.
The delegation from Uzbekistan headed by Aziz Abdukhakimov, Deputy Prime Minister, Chairman of the National Commission for UNESCO, is taking part in this event.
Uzbekistan has been cooperating with UNESCO for many years. For example, the Navruz holiday has recently been included in the list of intangible cultural heritage of the organization.
During the Baku session of the Committee, 36 out of 42 proposals for inclusion in the World Heritage List will be considered, including six natural, 28 cultural and two mixed natural and cultural monuments.
The session agenda includes a hearing of the report on the implementation of the budget for 2018-2019; discussions will take place on proposals related to the budget of the World Heritage Fund for 2020-2021.
Among other planned events are the hearings of advisory bodies, the nomination of files proposed for the for inclusion in the World Heritage List, and discussions on the preservation of monuments included in the list.
