The study and preservation of the cultural and historical heritage of Uzbekistan is the goal of the two-day International Scientific and Cultural Congress "The Cultural Legacy of Uzbekistan: the way to dialogue between peoples and countries." It took place on May 15 and 16 in Tashkent and Samarkand.
The Scientific Congress was attended by more than 120 foreign and 100 Uzbek scholars, collectors and experts who specialize in oriental studies, archeology, history, oriental manuscripts, numismatics, textiles, ceramics, metal products, works of jewelry and painting, preserving and promoting and propaganda of the cultural and historical heritage of Uzbekistan. Among them are representatives of Russia, the USA, China, Canada, Italy, Great Britain, India, Egypt, Korea, Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Germany, Czech Republic, Turkey, Greece, Azerbaijan, representatives of UNESCO and ICOMOS (International Council on Monuments and Sites).
The key event of the forum was the presentation of the exclusive cultural and educational media project "The Cultural Legacy of Uzbekistan in the World Collections." Its author is an honored journalist of Uzbekistan Firdavs Abdukhalikov and the Scientific Supervisor of the project is the Academician of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan Edvard Rveladze.
"The fact that holding such a Congress became possible is the result of the policy pursued by the country's leadership and personally by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. The policy, when civil society is given a way to implement various initiatives, which, among other things, support socially responsible commercial enterprises. There is an understanding, today it is important not only to do business, but also to support projects aimed at the spiritual development of youth and the wide popularization of the cultural legacy of Uzbekistan," Abdukhalikov emphasized.
In addition, the forum shown the first five volumes of album books from the Cultural Legacy of Uzbekistan series published in three languages. This is the Collection of the State Museum of Oriental Art (Moscow), the Collection of the Russian Museum of Ethnography (St. Petersburg), the Collection of the State Tretyakov Gallery (Moscow), Carpets and Embroidery of Uzbekistan in the World Collections (Russia, the USA, Canada, and Australia), and the Works by Alisher Navoi in the Collection of the Russian National Library (St. Petersburg). Six more volumes are preparing for printing. Their presentation also took place at the forum. This is the Musical Heritage of Uzbekistan, the Collection of the State Hermitage, the Collection of the State Historical Museum, the Collection of the Institute of Oriental Manuscripts, Carpet-Making of Uzbekistan: a tradition preserved for centuries and the Collection of Museums in Germany.
Documentary films about the creation of these books and the collections of Uzbekistan in collections of various museums in the world were also presented to the Forum participants.
“It is incredibly difficult to work with the rarest museum exhibits, whose history goes back several centuries and in principle to work in a museum,” said Shahnoza Ganieva, the author of the films, a well-known TV journalist, art critic and public figure. “It’s not always possible to put on a light and it’s not always possible to open a showcase. And when it comes to priceless manuscripts, then it’s just scary to pick them up! But when I was in museums, first of all I took gloves with me. And when I put them on, the staff museums told me: "And you, it turns out, can be trusted!"
In addition to the exhibits directly, the films included exclusive interviews with world-class scholars.
For the International Forum, the Organizational Committee for the event was formed under the chairmanship of the Director of the National Center for Human Rights, Chairman of the Committee on Democratic Institutes and Non-State Organizations and Self-Government of Citizens of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan Akmal Saidov. The organizing committee included representatives of academies and research organizations of Uzbekistan, international organizations, as well as foreign experts and scholars studying the cultural legacy of Uzbekistan.
"It so happened that the numerous cultural values of Uzbekistan are kept in more than 40 museums in the world and numerous private collections. Today, we have collected an extensive factual base that will allow us to make the most complete list of objects that make up the invaluable heritage of our country," Saidov noted.
A program of accompanying measures was worked out for the participants in the congress. Among them are a visit to the folklore media festival with a tasting of the best dishes of the national cuisine of all regions of Uzbekistan, as well as a competition for the best pilaf, watching the unique light-music representation in Registan Square 3D-map "The Cultural Legacy of Uzbekistan: the property of all of humanity", as well as visiting the exhibition of the best carpets and embroidery of Uzbek masters with the presentation of the Carpets and Embroidery of Uzbekistan in the World Collections album in the Ulugbek Madrasah.
During the International Forum, the new satellite multimedia channel Karavan-TV began broadcasting, aimed at popularizing the cultural and historical heritage and the tourism potential of Uzbekistan. The gala dinner of the forum was held in the Oriental Garden "Bagishamol" recreated in the image of one of the seven gardens of Amir Timur around Samarkand. Dinner was accompanied by the performance of players of the National Uzbek Classical Music. The album-book The Musical Heritage of Uzbekistan was presented. A separate solemn moment of the forum was the honoring of the archaeologist, researcher, Doctor of History, professor, academician of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan, and scientific supervisor of the Cultural Legacy of Uzbekistan in the World Collections Edvard Rtveladze on the occasion of his 75th birthday.
The project was able to become a reality with the support of the National Association of the Electronic Media of Uzbekistan, UNESCO Office in Tashkent, the Representative Office of the Conrad Adenauer Foundation in Central Asia, the Zamon Press Info Publishing House, the Uzbekistan Today Information Agency and the Caravan-TV channel. It is noteworthy that the project is being implemented without financial support from the state, solely due to the participation of socially responsible companies and civil initiatives.
The International Congress was a vivid event in the implementation of the Strategy of actions in the five priority areas of development of Uzbekistan for 2017–2021 adopted on the initiative of the President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
