UNESCO Deputy Director General for Culture Ernesto Ottone sent a welcome message to the participants and guests of the Uzbekistan Cultural Heritage Week, which starts in Tashkent on December 15 this year.
According to the head of the international organization, there are five UNESCO World Heritage sites in Uzbekistan and six elements included in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.
"The cultural wealth of Uzbekistan can become an important basis for building the country's future. <...> the cultural heritage and creativity play a crucial role in reducing poverty by creating jobs and improving the well-being of the population," Ernesto Ottone said.
He added that he highly appreciates Uzbekistan's efforts. The authorities of the republic regard culture as central element in the country's development strategy, which fully corresponds to the mission of UNESCO, concluded Ottone.
