During his visit to France, the President of Uzbekistan held talks with the Director General of UNESCO, during which they discussed joint projects in the field of science, culture and protection of the historical and architectural heritage of the republic.
President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev met with UNESCO Director General Audrey Azoulay during a two-day visit to France, the press service of the head of the state reports.
Mirziyoyev stressed that Uzbekistan's cooperation with the organization has been developing steadily for a long time, a number of joint projects are being implemented, and there are new areas of development.
During the meeting, Shavkat Mirziyoyev and Audrey Azoulay signed a cooperation program until 2021.
In addition, the Director General of the organization supported the initiatives of the Uzbek leader to establish the Mirzo Ulugbek International Institute for the formation of a culture of peace, tolerance and prevention of extremism in Samarkand under the auspices of UNESCO, as well as plans to open the Regional Center for Information and Communication Technologies in Education at the University of Information Technologies in Tashkent and UNESCO departments at the International University of Tourism in Samarkand.
The parties agreed to hold in Uzbekistan a regional forum of young scholars from Central Asia, as well as the Asian Forum "Information Technologies in the Safeguarding of the Cultural Heritage", which is to be held in Tashkent in 2019.
Uzbekistan and UNESCO intend to continue cooperation in the field of preserving the architectural heritage of the republic. Azoulay highly appreciated Tashkent's efforts in this direction.
Uzbekistan has been twice elected to the Executive Board of the organization. Together with UNESCO, the anniversaries of Amir Temur, Mirzo Ulugbek, Fergani, Imam Bukhari, Kamoliddin Behzod, the ancient cities of Bukhara, Khiva, Termez, Shakhrisabz, Karshi, Samarkand, Margilan and Tashkent, the monuments of ethnos and literature Alpomish and Avesta and the Mamun Academy in Khorezm were celebrated on an international scale.
The Ichan-kala complex in Khiva, the Samarkand - the Intersection of Cultures object, the Bukhara and Shakhrisabz historical centers, as well as the Chatkal biosphere are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. In addition, the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage includes "Shashmakom", the "Cultural Space of Baysun", "Katta ashula", "Askia", "Pilaf", "Navruz" and satin and adras textile production technologies.
The Sharq Taronalari music festival is regularly held in Samarkand under the auspices of UNESCO, and in September 2018, the first International Macom Art Forum was held in Shakhrisabz.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization — UNESCO — was established on November 16, 1945. Its main goal is to promote peace and security by expanding cooperation in the fields of education, science, culture, communication and tourism. Uzbekistan joined UNESCO in October 1993, and the organization currently includes 195 countries.
