Zoomorphic motifs in embroidery

The art of embroidery in Uzbekistan inherits the richest traditions of this ancient craft formed in the region.

The local types of embroidery are Bukhara, Nurata, Shakhrisabz, Samarkand, Tashkent, and Fergana. Embroideries from Uzbekistan are deservedly appreciated abroad. Created by skilled craftswomen, they adorn the expositions of many world museums and reveal one more aspect of history, culture and soul of the people.

In addition to floral motifs, embroidery includes zoomorphic elements. The most spread images were horns of an ibex – kiik, a snake, a leech. The choice was determined by the ancient, this time, totemic beliefs. Embroidery decorated with epigraphic pattern such as good wishes in the Arabic script are expressive. The general number of embroidery in the collection is 1064.

You can learn more about the topic in the book-album "The Collection of the State Museum of the History of Uzbekistan" (Part 2, Volume XXVII) in the series "Сultural legacy of Uzbekistan in the world collections".

The general sponsor of the project is the oilfield services company Eriell-Group.
