The State Museum of Arts of the Republic of Karakalpakstan named after I.V. Savitskiy was established in February 1966 on the basis of the decision of the Government of the Republic of Karakalpakstan. Its first director was Igor Vitalyevich Savitskiy, a Moscow artist who forever linked his creative destiny with Karakalpakstan, leaving Moscow and moving to the city of Nukus. Since the first days of acquaintance with the culture of this region, I. V. Savitskiy was filled with great love for the archaeological finds of ancient and medieval Khorezm, the decorative and applied art of the Karakalpak people and the peoples who lived on this ancient land, discovering the world of the Russian and the Turkestan avantgarde. With the support and confidence of Karakalpakstan’s leaders and intelligentsia, I. V. Savitskiy formed a unique collection of the museum in the shortest time.
