Bactria and Sogdiana on the Great Silk Road - in the collection of the Japanese Museum‌

Miho Museum keeps collections of art of the ancient civilizations of the world, from Egypt and Mesopotamia, to China and Ancient America.

The art of Central Asia is also broadly presented in the collection, starting from Ancient Bactria and finishing with Early Medieval period.

The earliest objects in the collection are attributed to the III – beginning of the II millennium BC and relied to Bactria-Margiana archaeological complex. A significant part of Central Asian collection is represented in the Zoroastrian art of the Oxus (Amu Darya) River valley of the middle and second half of the I millennium B.C. Among the latest objects of the collection should be mentioned panels of the burial coach of the VI century AD, depicting the scenes of life of the Sogdians.

All objects of the Museum were collected according to the esthetic concept of Mrs. Koyama Mihoko, who was guided by the intention to bring beauty to the world.

You can learn more about the topic in the book-album "Cultural legacy of Central Asia in Japanese Museums" (volume XX) in the series "Cultural Legacy of Uzbekistan in the World Collections".
