What does Mavarannakhr mean?

The entry of Central Asia in the 8th century into the Arab Caliphate led to a change in its political fate, its inclusion in a single area of Islamic civilization.

Persian comes to replace Eastern Iranian languages; Arabic becomes the language of writing. A region received a new, Arabic name – Mavarannakhr (Arabic “Mā warā–an-Nahr, or “what is beyond the river”)

Large parts of the population of the right bank of the Amu Darya, especially from Sogdiana, left for the north and east, beyond the Syr Darya, to Zhetysu and further to East Turkestan, where they preserved their way of living for another century and a half. At the same time, in the metropolis the heritage of the ancient cultures of Sogdiana, Bactria and Khorezm was observed for a very long time, which was manifested in the religious festivals and monumental architecture, in the interior decoration of dwellings, the decoration of applied

art and many other things.

The vital role in the inclusion of Mavarannakhr into the Arab Caliphate belongs to Qutayba ibn Muslim; after his campaign in 712 – 713 in Samarkand, Sogdiana was given the name “Garden of the Victorious Caliph”.
