Did you know that Nowruz was celebrated in the summer in the 7th century?‌‌‌‌

Gift giving during the Nowruz festival is a very ancient Iranian custom.

Some Persian texts from the 10th and 11th centuries report with regard to Jamshid, the mythical first king of Iran, that Nowruz was considered t he most propitious time for the coronation of kings. During the seventh century, the Sogdians (as other Iranian and non-Iranians peoples in general) celebrated Nowruz in the summer. The southern wall bears a mural that seems to show part of the Nowruz festival dedicated to the fravashi (often rendered as “soul”) of all dead: the Fravardigan or “all saints festivity” which is currently still celebrated in Iran.

You can learn more about the topic in the book-album "Sogdia: the Heart of the Silk Road" (XXXV volume) in the series "Cultural Legacy of Uzbekistan in the World Collections".

The main sponsor of the project is the oilfield services company Eriell-Group.
