SOGDIA: THE HEART OF THE SILK ROAD

Description

Sogdia, Sogd or Sogdiana, located in the heart of Central Asia, never existed as an independent state, but its role in the development of world civilization can hardly be overestimated. The inhabitants of this cultural and historical region were the main influencers on the Great Silk Road. As they took control of goods that went through the territory, they became a kind of intermediaries in the dialogue between various countries and civilizations. This feature makes the culture of the early medieval Sogdia special. The art of Sogd is represented by amazing paintings that decorated the walls of palaces, artistic metal items, fabrics, ossuaries and burial sarcophagi and many more. These exhibits are present in the volume, the illustrative part of which includes monuments created both on the territory of Sogdiana and far beyond its borders. An international team of scholars from Uzbekistan, China, Italy and Russia worked on the volume. The book-album is the first academic publication in Uzbekistan, which accumulates important issues of Sogdian heritage and presents exhibits related to Sogdia from museums around the world.
