The musical heritage of Uzbekistan in the Hermitage

The State Hermitage in Saint Petersburg preserves the largest collection of artifacts of cultural, historical and artistic value in the world. The museum collections are colossal in their scope of various cultures and exhibits.

This is true for the collections of cultural objects from Uzbekistan and other countries of Central Asia.

The musical heritage of Uzbekistan, stored in the Hermitage, deserves a separate study. Forms of music-related articles from Afrasiab are represented in this album in a series of terracotta items featuring figures of wailers, musicians with lineal and transverse pipes, a lute, and a “model” of a lute.

Among the famous terracotta pieces are also the following items: a musician holding a Pan flute from the site of Zartepe, Surkhandarya region, Uzbekistan (No. A-2549), dated to circa 1st – 4th century AD; a musician with a lute, from the fortress of Bazar-qala in Khorezm (late BC – early AD); discovered by the expedition of S. P. Tolstov (No. CA-7133). According to music expert R. L. Sadokov, it resembled a two-string plucked instrument.

You can learn more about the topic in the book-album "The Musical Legacy of Uzbekistan in Collections of the Russian Federation" (Volume VI) from the series "The Cultural Legacy of Uzbekistan".
