The first newspaper published in Uzbek (Arabic script) was "Turkiston viloyatinining gazetasi" ("Turkestan Native Newspaper"), which was published in Tashkent from 1870 to 1916. Its purpose was to acquaint the peoples of the Turkestan region with the orders of the local administration and to inform about the history and geography of the region.
On April 28 (May 10), 1870, the first issue of the official Russian-language newspaper "Turkestanskiye Vedomosti" (Tashkent, 1870–1917) was published. It published articles on literature, ethnography, history, and agriculture of the Turkestan region. The alphabetical and subject card catalog (handwritten), compiled based on a detailed description of the newspaper "Turkestanskiye Vedomosti" for the period from 1893 to 1917, is a great help in studying the history of the fatherland.
