There are six main groups of skullcaps: Tashkent, Ferghana, Samarkand, Bukhara, Kashkadarya-Surkhandarya, and Khorezm-Karakalpak.
Margilan skullcaps of the Chust type feature elongated, smooth, and delicate "pepper pods". A distinctive characteristic of Margilan women's skullcaps is the continuous embroidery using the "iroqi" stitch, often depicting a motif of a blossoming bush. Sometimes, green or blue nightingales (a symbol of happiness) are incorporated into the branches. In Margilan, these are known as "bulbul nusha". The iroqi stitch in the skullcap patterns can also incorporate individual words or entire phrases, even female and male names.
You can learn more about the topic in the book-album "The Collection of the State Museum of the History of Uzbekistan" (Volume XXVII) in the series "The Cultural Legacy of Uzbekistan".
The main sponsor of the project is the oilfield services company Eriell-Group.
