Originally skullcaps had a conical shape and wide sides. Since the 1920s, the forms of the skullcap have changed, becoming varied: peaked, cone-shaped, hemispherical, round, quadrangular. They can have a high or low side trimmed with embroidered or one-collared tape, a ribbon of silk, velvet and other fabrics, sometimes long or short tassels were added.
The most common among Uzbek skullcaps are quadrangular, symbolizing the four directions of the world. Men’s skullcaps are sewn mainly from black satin or velvet, while women’s are sewn from multicoloured silk, velvet and brocade.
