Basic materials for gold embroidery

The sophistication of his patterns, the subtlety of his work and his fantastic pattern creation brought him worldwide fame. Nowadays, this craft is mainly carried out by women. As many years ago, they embroider by hand. Whether it’s a skullcap or a wall panel, shoes or a robe – each item is a true work of art.

The main material with which the master works is metal threads kalebatun, representing a very narrow and thin strip of gilded metal or thin silver flattened wire, sometimes covered with gilding, tightly wound on a silk or paper thread. In addition to metal threads, coloured twisted or non-twisted silk, velvet and silk applications, embossed kuba or kubba olmasi sockets made of gold threads and imitating gold jewellery are used. The embroidery is applied on velvet of dark tones of cherry, blue, lilac and crimson. Soft velvet depth enhances the decorative effect of gold embroidery. The texture of the material, the embroidery technique, the construction of the ornament, its decorative and colour solution are interconnected, complement each other and create a single harmonious image.
