Amir Temur used musical instruments widely in his army, and military music was utilized in all his campaigns and wars. He changed the military functions of musical instruments and systematized their application by recording their rules in his work "Regulations", which contains the section “Rules for the distribution of timpani and banners”.
At the core of Amir Temur‘s prescriptions lies the idea of the hierarchy of instruments when they are presented to military leaders. In real military practice, which is reflected in the chronicles, two related percussion instruments of the “big timpani” type were the most heavily relied upon. One of them was the old Persian timpani called the kus, and the second is an analogue of the kus coming from the Turkic-Mongolian military, referred to by the Chagatai term of kurke (kureke).
