Ancient copies of manuscripts of the 13th century

In the collection of the Institute of Oriental Studies named after Abu Raikhan Beruni of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan, a work in Arabic titled “Kitab al-ghina wa al-muna” (Sufficient and Desired Book) by Bukharan doctor Hasan ibn Nuh al-Qumri (al-Qamari) al-Bukhari (d. 999) that also referred to as “Kunnash” (Collection and “Shamsiya al-Mansuriyya” (Solar [Book of] Mansur) is of great scientific interest.

Al-Qumri was known both as a theorist doctor and a practicing doctor. He was a mentor of Ibn Sina in the area of medicine and was highly esteemed by the ruler of Bukhara, Mansur ibn Nuh (961– 976), to whom the scientist dedicated this work, judging by the title. The medical book remains as a manuscript dated to the 15th century.

Medical books in the earliest manuscripts of the 13th century include two works: “Taqwim al-abdan fi tadbir al-insan” (The Distribution of the human organism with [indication of] methods of treatment) by the Baghdadian doctor Yahya ibn ‘Isa ibn Jazlа (d. 1100) and dedicated to Abbassid caliph al-Muqtadi bi-Amr Allah (1075 – 1094), and anonymous excerpts on practical matters from a large work on medicine. The work by Ibn Jazla is noteworthy because the material is represented in the form of 44 tables.

You can learn more about this topic in the book-album “The Collection of the Al-Biruni Institute of Oriental studies, the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan” (part two, “Miniature and Calligraphy”) (Volume XXII) from the series "Cultural Legacy of Uzbekistan in the World Collections".
