Ancient sites of Surkhandarya region

A significant and most valuable part of the Museum’s archaeological collection is made up of items discovered during archaeological research of ancient sites in the territory of the Surkhandarya region.

In 1975, the Museum was replenished with materials from the excavations of Sapallitepa (17th – 15th centuries BC) headed by academician A. A. Askarov. In 1978, the Institute of Archeology of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan handed over artifacts from the sites of Jarkutan and Mollalitepa to the Museum.

A. A. Musakaeva and P. Gendelman brought items made of ceramic, terracotta, glass, bronze, iron, stone, bone, and adornments from the sites of Old Termez and Shurob-Kurgan to the Museum. Among them, trays with various types of chased ornaments are of particular interest.

You can learn more about this topic in the book-album “The Collection of the State Museum of the History of Uzbekistan” (part one) (Volume XXVI) from the series "Cultural Legacy of Uzbekistan in the World Collections".

The main sponsor of the project is the oilfield services company Eriell-Group.
