Samarkand, Bukhara and Urgench in pastel sketches by Svetlitsky

The majestic architectural ensembles of Uzbekistan were depicted realistically in pencil and pastel sketches by the Leningrad artists and architects I. A. Bartenev (1911 – 1985) and S. P. Svetlitsky (1913 – 1992).

Pastel graphics by S. P. Svetlitsky (1974, 23 units), also dedicated to the religious buildings of Samarkand, Bukhara and Urgench, were acquired by the Museum in 1976 from the artist himself. Sergei Pavlovich Svetlitsky graduated from the I. Repin Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (1945); he was a member of the Union of Architects of the USSR (1946).

Using pastel, gouache and felt pen in an expert manner, the artist painted architectural ensembles on a background of either a bright blue or a deep dark blue sky. The architectural decor and details of the ornament are very generalized.
