The heyday and development of jewelry art in Bukhara

Production jewelry in ancient times in Bukhara was a special branch of craft and reflected society’s craving for luxury and wealth.

The earliest finds of jewelry on the present territory of the Bukhara oasis belong to the Bronze Age (2nd – early 1st millennium B.C.). In the 16th century in the central market of the city jewelers had a special place – Toki Zargaron – a dome o f jewelers. The heyday of the jeweler’s art in Bukhara the late medieval epoch came, in the 2nd half of the 19th – early 20th century. The basic material with which masters of the Bukhara work in the workshop was gold, from antiquity, symbolized the magical power of the sun and male supremacy, and silver, symbolizing femininity.
