The role of jewelry in the attire of Bukhara women

Women's jewelry was worn from three to four years old until old age.

The outfit of the city bride was particularly varied and rich, the weight of her jewelry reaching 8 kg. Jewelry, like other attributes, was supposed to promote procreation. After the birth of the child, the number of decorations began to decrease.

In the costume of Bukhara women, jewelry played both a decorative and distracting, protective role. There were many of them, they were obligatory as a symbol of well-being, but they were not overused in everyday wear. The ones most often worn were those that were believed to have strong protective functions.

You will find more examples of traditional jewelry in the book-album "Traditional Uzbek costume on materials of museum and private collections of Uzbekistan (Part 1)" (volume XLVIII) from the series "Cultural legacy of Uzbekistan in the world collections."

The general sponsor of the project is the oilfield services company Eriell-Group.
