Peculiar clothing of the Chinese Sogdians

Peculiar clothing of the Chinese Sogdians

The several costume items were still unknown in Sogdia, although in China they were undoubtedly worn only by Sogdians.

For example, Short traveling coat (short sheepskin coat) made of a sheep fleece. If worn on the naked body but with the wool turned out, then it was the summer variation. Frequently, while traveling, it was worn on the naked body and thrown wide open. Furthermore shirt with the sleeves much widened at the ends, low headdress, jutting out at the back of the head, with a row of large seams along the edge and а conical headdress made of fabric jutting out widely at the back of the head are very unique. Young servants wore sometimes a special kitchen apron over their street clothes; it is not Chinese in appearance. Long working stockings attached by straps to the belt, which, due to the nature of the subjects and status of the participants depicted in Sogdian art, are not documented in their homeland.

The caravaneers both on foot and on camels are occasionally shown wearing them. An example of Sogdians outside the homeland borrowing costume from Sogdia’s neighbors is a monochrome hat in the shape of a cylinder (the elite wore it with a rather high band or base). The lining of the most popular yellow caftans (seen behind the lapels) was usually green; red ones had white lining and blue ones had red lining. Rarely the lining was of expensive patterned polychrome silk. The short caftans worn by some caravaneers had wedge-shaped slits on the sides.

You can learn more about the topic in the book-album "Sogdia: the Heart of the Silk Road" (XXXV volume) from the series "Cultural Legacy of Uzbekistan in the World Collections".
