Who was Tuglu-Tekin, whose mausoleum can be seen in Samarkand?

Who was Tuglu-Tekin, whose mausoleum can be seen in Samarkand?

On the eastern side of the corridor, in the middle group of structures of the Shakhi-Zinda memorial ensemble, there is the Tuglu Tekin mausoleum.

Judging by the inscription on the portal, it was built in 777 AH / 1376, for the mother of Amir Husain, one of the commanders of Amir Temur.

The portal and the lower panel of the walls inside the room are almost completely covered with ceramic cladding. Mosaic decor techniques are harmoniously combined with carved glazed terracotta. Color solutions are contrasting, although blue, cyan, turquoise are mainly used. Most of the walls and the inside of the dome are covered with white plaster. Perhaps there was a painting on it, which is now not preserved.

On the pylons of the portal, a fragment of a dedicatory inscription in Arabic, made in the technique of carved glazed terracotta, has been preserved.

The background of the inscription is dark blue, the letters are light blue. The inscription itself is made in suls handwriting and has very plastic outlines. Much of the inscription has been lost. During the last restoration, unfortunately, part of the text on the left pylon was knocked down.

The beginning of the inscription on the right pylon, in violation of all restoration norms, was blocked by the wall of the restored chortak. Here is a more complete version of the text.

... her home. Tuglu Tekin, daughter of Amir Khojam. And her son and the light of her eyes Amir, said, martyr Amir Khusayn, son of Kara-kutlug - may Allah water his grave! He accepted martyrdom in the [month] zu-l-qaada of the year seven hundred and seventy-eight [March-April 1376].

At the end of this inscription, in a rectangular cartouche, there is a hadith:

This world is a bridge to the future eternal life.
