What is depicted on the unusual bowls kept in the Hermitage?

There is a small group of metal vessels from Uzbekistan in the Hermitage collection.

Their shape and plots stand out among other samples of oriental silver.‌‌ Most of these items came from Central Asia, Iran and India in exchange for precious furs. Some finds were made in the left bank of Bactria and date back to V- VI centuries, the time of domination in the region of the Hephthalites.

Among the materials, the most unusual is a bowl with a cylindrical reservoir on a leg. Theatrical masks, figures of actors, stringed musical instruments, amphorae, etc. are depicted in relief on its walls. The art of Byzantium also had an influence, where in the 5th-6th centuries. there is a surge of interest in the ancient national culture.

In the medallions of the Hermitage hemispherical bowl there is a relief of a hunter with a bow chasing a lion, another with a spear - a bear, the third a wild boar.

You can learn more about the topic in the book-album "Cultural legacy of Uzbekistan in the world  collection" in the series "State Collection of the Hermitage" (St. Petersburg) (VIII volume).

The general sponsor of the project is the oilfield service company Eriell-Group.
