Who is buried in a two-domed mausoleum at the Shahi-Zinda architectural ensemble?

To the north of the summer iwan mosque at the Shahi-Zinda necropolis, about which we told earlier, there is the base of a steep staircase leading up onto a bank that formed the rampart of Afrasiab.

To the west of the stairway's bottom stands a mausoleum that can be ranked as one of the most beautiful in Shahi-Zinda.

According to some researchers, this is the burial place for the astronomer Kazi-zadeh Rumi, Mirzo Ulugbek's associate. According to local legends, these were the graves of Uljay Khatun, Amir Temur's nurse (inaga/enaga), and her daughter Bibi Senab.

The mausoleum consists of two rooms – a ziyorat-khona for pilgrimage and a burial chamber. It is accessed from the south.
The walls of the memorial room are in the form of wide blind arches. The light enters the room through an arcade in a tall drum. The walls are covered with partially preserved decoration – blue on a white background. In the lower part of the walls there is a panel of carved hexagonal tiles (restored based on ancient remains).

A stepped tombstone (sagana) can be found inside the adjoining small burial chamber. The dome of the burial chamber with a high drum is decorated with multicolored muquarnas. The structure is different other famous architectural monuments in both the layout and decor. The mausoleum was erected after many of Samarkand's famous buildings, such as the Bibi-khanim mosque and Guri-Amir mausoleum. But none of these structures has such a high dome (more precisely, drum) as that on the described Kazi-zade Rumi mausoleum.

The mausoleum is located at the very foot of the ancient city wall. However, thanks to its proportions, its dome is almost level with those on other monuments located above.

You can read more about structures in the memorial ensemble in the book-album Samarkand. Shahi-Zinda from the Architectural Epigraphy of Uzbekistan series.
