An Arab Nation Preserving Its Traditions in Samarkand

HOW TO BECOME A FRIEND OF THE WORLD SOCIETY?

An Arab Nation Preserving Its Traditions in Samarkand

Certain photographs also captured Central Asian Arabs who settled in villages along the middle and lower reaches of the Zeravshan River, from Samarkand to the Karakul Oasis, tracing their ancestry back to the Arabs who spread Islam in Central Asia.

Over centuries of living among the Uzbeks, they adopted their language, material culture, and way of life, but did not lose their sense of self and carefully preserved many customs and traditions of their distant past – in family rituals, clothing and jewelry, crafts, and trades.

You can learn more about the topic in the book album “Uzbekistan in historic photographs of the 19th - early 20th centuries in the collections of Russian archives” (Volume XXXVII) in the series “Cultural Legacy of Uzbekistan”.

The general sponsor of the project is the oilfield services company Eriell-Group.
