A young man with a book from the Louvre

One very famous page from a dispersed muraqqa album from the early 17th century is kept under the code "OA 7109" in the Islamic Art Department of the Louvre.

It is known for its multi-figure composition of a reading youth. It was probably designed in Bukhara, around 1610; the scenes in the margins were created by Muhammad Murad, while Muhammad Sharif drew the central figure of the young man with a book. This page was originally placed opposite another, designed by the same artists, depicting a princess. The second page was acquired by Vever and is currently in Washington. It is registered at the Sackler Gallery under number S.86.0304.

You can learn more about the topic in the book-album "Illustrated manuscripts from Mawarannahr in the collections of France" (Volume XXIX) in the series "The Cultural Legacy of Uzbekistan".

The main sponsor of the project is the oilfield services company Eriell-Group.
