Preserving and Promoting the Legacy of Mawarannahr: New Horizons of Cooperation in Madrid

Mawarannahr and the history of the peoples of Central Asia, their state traditions and cultural heritage have always been of interest to foreign researchers.

Nowadays, numerous manuscripts and artifacts related to this legacy are kept in Madrid, Spain. The Chairman of the Board of WOSCU, Director of the Center for Islamic Civilization of Uzbekistan, F. Abduhalikov, visited this city to familiarize himself with the rare treasures and important manuscripts for the Islamic world.

The meeting with renowned Quran specialist, orientalist and paleography expert François Deroche, as well as with the head of the Kulturalis publishing house Charlotte Kramer, turned out to be particularly productive. During the talks, the concept of the Center for Islamic Civilization in Uzbekistan and efforts to enrich museum exhibits with new materials were discussed. The "114 Qur'ans" project was also discussed, which involves publishing 114 rarest and richly decorated pages of the sacred manuscript in one facsimile album. François Deroche agreed to become the scientific coordinator of the project.

The National Library of Madrid was also an important point of the visit. This is another source related to the cultural history of Uzbekistan. The library managed to see the original book written by the Spanish ambassador Ruy Gonzalez de Clavijo about the state of Amir Timur. The book "Diaries" is an important work on the history of the era of Timur and Timurids. Clavijo was one of the few Europeans who personally communicated with Timur. The meeting discussed the creation of a facsimile copy of the book for Uzbekistan and its delivery. The head of the Manuscript Department of the National Library supported the project and expressed readiness to cooperate.

During the meetings, agreements were reached on joint projects to preserve and popularize the cultural heritage of Uzbekistan and strengthen further cooperation.
