Images that also adorn poetry

As in Iran, besides historical writings, extensive poetic texts were also illustrated here.

One often wonders: did there not exist, alongside commissions carried out in court workshops-kitabhanas at the behest of the ruler or dignitaries, a more mass-produced output that imitated the luxurious manuscripts of these workshops? The manuscript Supplément persan 1958 is an interesting example of book production of a very high level. It was copied in the court workshop-kitabhana of Bukhara under the supervision of the kitabdar Sultan-Mirak munshi by the renowned calligrapher Mir ‘Ali, and its illustrations testify to a deliberate desire to create a masterpiece.

Pay attention to this beautiful painting. In the palace, the vizier saw a young man among the robbers and persuaded the ruler to forgive him. But the ungrateful young man did not change his behavior and two years later robbed the vizier and killed his sons. This story is told in the first chapter of the "Gulistan".

You can learn more about the topic in the book-album "Illustrated manuscripts from Mawarannahr in the collections of France" (Volume XXIX) in the series "The Cultural Legacy of Uzbekistan".
