He spent most of his life in Jam, near Herat. He was protected by Mir ‘Alisher Navoi who was amir of divan-i ‘ala of the Sultan and by his uncle Jami. His Khamsa, composed in imitation of Nizami’s poems, includes a new version of the story of Khusraw and Shirin. His Khusraw va Shirin, written ca. 1490, seems to have had rapid success.
Already in 1498 – 1499 a copy of the poem was made and illustrated in Istanbul for the Ottoman sultan Bayazid II1, who was also passionate about Persian poetry. This manuscript has no colophon. The beginning of the text is missing.
