When did India begin producing handmade paper?

It is known that Sultan Ghiyas ud-din Balban ruled Delhi from 1266 to 1287.

When did India begin producing handmade paper?

During this period, the production of handmade paper became widespread. Many qagazi (papermakers) from the Central Asian region came to India to meet the needs of the elite and the academic world for this product. Even today, one can find Qagaziparaz and Qagazi Muhallas in many Indian cities.

Along with them came calligraphers who copied books on commission; in addition, they trained young scribes locally, contributing to the growth of literacy in the population.

You can learn more about the topic in the book-album "Literary legacy of Uzbekistan in the Collection of the Rampur raza Library" (volume XXXIII) in the series "Cultural legacy of Uzbekistan in the Collections of the World".
