Bukhara miniatures in the Louvre

The National Library of France and the Louvre Museum hold a significant portion of French collections of illuminated manuscripts from Khwarazm.

Bukhara miniatures in the Louvre

Many famous French collectors donated their valuable acquisitions to these museums, enriching their collections. One of them is Gaston Migeon. Migeon (1861 – 1930) was librarian and later keeper in Musée du Louvre and himself a collector of Islamic Art. He gave much of his collection to the museums between 1894 and his death.

He was in touch with every specialist of his time and with the art dealers. An album of his own collection with Bukharan paintings and calligraphies of ca. 1545 – 1560, coming from the bequest in 1948 of Mrs. G. Migeon, is in the collections of the Musée des arts décoratifs de Paris, now on deposit in the Musée du Louvre. This album is also a good example of Mawarannahr artistic production.

You can learn more about the topic in the book-album "Illustrated manuscripts from Mawarannahr in the collections of France" (Volume XXIX) in the series "The Cultural Legacy of Uzbekistan".

The main sponsor of the project is the oilfield services company Eriell-Group.
