What kind of headdress did Karakalpaks wear in everyday life?

Casual headwear of Karakalpak women was turme – turban of kerchiefs or cloth, was spun on top of the tubeteika.

Turme was for urban and rural women varying in shapes, sizes and style to wear.

Karakalpak girls’ turme were made of silk or calico, the sort of aydynly (full moon), was mostly red color. Only old women used white fabric. If the cloth for the turban was from aydynly, that turban was called aydynly oramal. In the cold season, leaving the house, over the turban a head was tied by large scarf, shalgysh or sharshy.

You will find more examples of national Uzbek clothes in the book-album "Traditional Uzbek costume on materials of museum and private collections of Uzbekistan (Part 2)" (volume XLIX) from the series "Cultural legacy of Uzbekistan in the world collections".

The general sponsor of the project is the oilfield services company Eriell-Group.
