When did the State Museum of Arts of Uzbekistan get a new building?

In 1974, a historic event happened in the Museum. A new, modern building was constructed in the very centre of Tashkent for it.

It was in the form of a cube glazed on all sides. The basements were intended for the placement of collection storage facilities and machinery. The ground floor was occupied by a lecture hall, a foyer with a cloakroom and an art salon. From the foyer, visitors got into the inner courtyard with light from above, where samples of the architectural decor of Uzbekistan were placed. On marble steps visitors go up to the second, third and fourth floors, where there are 50 halls with the main expositions.

The grand opening of the Museum in the new building took place on April 30, 1974. To this day the Museum remains in this building. Visitors can get acquainted with fine works of antiquity, decorative and applied arts of different countries and works of Russian and Western European artists.

The works of Uzbek artists show the history of the development of the country’s fine arts. Among them are works of such famous artists as J. Umarbekov, B. Jalalov, A. Mirzaev, D. Ruzybaev, A. Nur, M. Isanov, A. Turdyev. The artists’ paintings demonstrate the main trends in Uzbek art in the 1990s.

You can learn more about this topic in the book-album “The Collection of the State Museum of Arts of Uzbekistan”  (Volume XIII) from the series “Cultural legacy of Uzbekistan in the world collections”.

The general sponsor of the project is the oilfield services company Eriell-Group.
