David and Elizabeth Reisbords collection

With the enduring support and encouragement of his wife, artist Elizabeth Bloom Reisbord, Dr. Reisbord has carefully and thoughtfully collected textiles from Uzbekistan and greater Central Asia over the course of 30 years.

From their home in Santa Monica, California, thousands of miles away from the region, the Reisbords have amassed a significant group of examples dating from the 19th to early 20th centuries that includes robes, accessories, and wall hangings representative of the great scope and breadth of this specific medium and the diverse groups that make them.

His interest in collecting textiles was sparked during a trip to Guatemala in the 1960s, when Dr. Reisbord observed the distinctive dress of local people, which identified them as members of a particular village. With this new appreciation, wearable and wall-hanging textiles became the focus of his vast collecting, which now spans textiles from Southeast Asia, India, Central Asia, and Syria. Within each area of collecting, Dr. Reisbord dedicated himself to finding high-quality textiles that echoed the cultures from which they came and which represented a breadth of aesthetics within each category...

The extraordinary eye and devotion of the Reisbords’ collecting is best illustrated by the fact that in 2019, two major museums in their home town of Los Angeles debuted exhibitions curated solely around their collection.
