The suzani included here all originate from the Emirate of Bukhara. Those illustrated represent the two ends of the spectrum of suzani art, from bold to delicate. The Large Medallion Suzani are bold. In a sense they are powerfully masculine. To fully appreciate them, one needs to be able to view Large Medallion Suzani both close-up (to see the embroidery detail) and at a distance see the overall design.
Slightly over 60 Large Medallion Suzani are known to survive. The other end of the suzani designs scale is represented by suzani from the Shakhrisabz area. These suzani are floral and finely embroidered in a different technique. In a sense, these are delicately feminine while they retain a gorgeous presence. These suzani evoke an instant feeling of beauty and happiness.
