KAMAL AD-DIN BEHZAD: “THE ONE WHO SHAMED MANI”

Description

Behzad: "The One Who Shamed Mani" Kamal al-Din Behzad is one of the few painters of the Middle East whose talent evoked many enthusiastic responses both during his lifetime and in subsequent centuries. Wassily Kandinsky, who visited his exhibition, wrote: “It seemed that you were standing in front of something that is born by itself, that is given by heaven as a revelation ... Simplicity is almost barbaric. The complexity is almost dizzying, the sophistication of the most refined, daydreaming people.” However, for all his popularity and influence, the master's biography is known in dotted lines and can only give a general idea of his life path. His works, scattered in many museums and private collections around the world with some of them being controversial attributions, have not yet been fully identified and do not make it possible to present a complete list of his original works. In the Middle Ages, it was said that Behzad, with his talent, “shamed” the founder of Manichaeism and famous artist Mani. European researchers called Behzad "Raphael of the East", who not only synthesized the best that was in the creative experience of previous masters from Baghdad, Tabriz, Shiraz, Samarkand or Herat of the era of Shahrukh and Baysunkur, but also developed a new direction in art, giving it an incentive to further development. The album is also important because it is the first publication in Uzbekistan, which contains all the known works of the artist so revered in our country. For this, a huge amount of work was carried out in terms of correspondence with all institutions where the originals of Behzad's miniatures are currently stored. Author of the Masterpieces of Art of Uzbekistan series, author of the opening speech: Firdavs Abdukhalikov, Board Chairman of the World Society for the Study, Preservation and Popularization of the Cultural Legacy of Uzbekistan, author and manager of the Cultural Legacy of Uzbekistan in the World Collections project. Text by Zukhra Rakhimova, Candidate of Art History, Associate Professor at the K. Behzad National Institute of Arts and Design Design by Lola Radjabova (The Cultural Legacy of Uzbekistan in the World Collections project, Uzbekistan).
