THE LEGACY OF KAMAL UD-DIN BEHZAD IN THE WORLD COLLECTIONS

Description

This greatest painting master was called "Raphael of the East". History knows of no other medieval miniature painters whose names would be as widely known as the name of Kamal al-din Behzad (ca 1455-1535/36). "I can't believe that this could have been created by human hands!" wrote Vasily Kandinsky about him. The genres in which Behzad worked are diverse. He made portraits, landscapes, battle scenes and descriptive works dedicated to subjects such as Sufism, labor and mystical love. All of them are presented in the book-album. Currently, his works adorn manuscripts stored in museums and libraries around the world, including countries such as Iran, UK, Switzerland, USA, Russia, Turkey and Egypt. This volume for the first time brings together dozens of miniatures by Behzad stored around the world. The book-album also features works by his disciples. The photographs are accompanied by detailed comments by the artist on each miniature.
