THE COLLECTION OF THE KOKAND STATE MUSEUM-RESERVE

Description

Kokand is one of the oldest cities in Central Asia. It has been known by various names since the 10th century, but it reached its peak in the 18th century. The illustrated volume presents the best examples of artistic objects collected in the Kokand Museum-Reserve — one of the oldest cultural institutions in the Fergana Valley. The museum-reserve is a complex consisting of six museums and four monuments of cultural heritage. The main building of the museum is located in the heart of the city, in the palace of Khudoyar Khan, the ruler of the Khanate of Kokand. The palace itself is a unique monument of late medieval architecture. Sections of the volume are dedicated to various museum collections. For example, the numismatic collection is represented by coins of the Kokand rulers isued in the 18th and 19th centuries. The collection of manuscripts contains a number of 19th-century handwritten manuscripts such as a copy of the Quran, rewritten by order of Khudoyar Khan, madrassah textbooks, works on Sharia law, as well as a collection of Fizuli's ghazals. No less interesting are sections presenting collections of various types of applied art practiced in the Fergana Valley – textiles, metal items, jewelry… A richest collection of paintings also found its place in the book-album. On the pages of the volume you can find both works that have already become 20th-century classics, such as those by L. Bure, U. Tansykbaev, N. Karakhan, V. Ufimtsev, Ch. Akhmarov and others, as the best works of those who are actively working these days.
