ILLUSTRATED COPIES OF THE WORKS OF ‘ALI SHIR NAVA’I IN ISTANBUL LIBRARIES

Description

The name of Alisher Navoi (1441-1501), the great poet, thinker and politician, the founder of the Uzbek language and literature, who lived and worked under the Temurid ruler Sultan Hussein Baykara, was widely known during his lifetime, his fame going far beyond his native Herat. At that time, Herat was famous for its high art, which was a benchmark for neighboring states, including the Ottoman Empire. A bright representative of the Herat cultural circle, Navoi had a colossal literary influence. Ottoman poets wrote nazira (poetic imitations) of his poems. In addition, Navoi's manuscripts were used as models in the Ottoman manuscript book production in that period. The poet's legacy is huge. Nowadays, many illustrated manuscripts of Navoi's works are kept in the libraries of Istanbul. Each of them is a luxurious manuscript made on glossy paper, with amazing ornamental spreads and miniatures… The pages with sprinkled gold in the margins are also admirable. The book-album contains handwritten works by the great Uzbek poet from the libraries of Istanbul, such as Hamsa, Kulliyot, Garaib as-Sigar, Navadir ash-Shahab and others.
