CARPET MAKING OF UZBEKISTAN: A TRADITION PRESERVED THROUGH CENTURIES

Description

Who wove the first carpet? What materials and carpet-making techniques existed? How to read the symbolism hidden in the carpet ornament? The book-album gives the most complete picture of the history of carpet making in Uzbekistan – from the appearance of woven thread to modern production. Information is provided about which peoples wove carpets in Uzbekistan (these sections illustrate items made by the Karakalpaks, the Arabs of Kashkadarya, the Turkmens of the middle reaches of the Amu Darya – the territory that was part of the Emirate of Bukhara), as well as about the Uzbek carpets proper: long-pile julhirs, pile gilams and eight types of pileless carpets. Special attention is paid to the tradition of prayer carpets – joynamaz, the most famous of which was woven during one year by twenty weavers for the Bolo-Khauz mosque in Bukhara. The authors carried out painstaking work on the preparation of the catalog of the book-album, which includes the most interesting examples of carpet weaving in Uzbekistan from national and foreign collections.
