THE ARCHITECTURAL EPIGRAPHY OF UZBEKISTAN SAMARKAND Registan
Description
The Registan Square in Samarkand began to be developed in the 15th century, and, apparently, the first buildings were the madrasah and khanqah (Sufi monastery) of Ulugbek.
"This is a building adorning the Earth and equal to the sky. This tall building rose to the heavens. The one who was the mainstay of the best in management and prudence, who combined in himself the art of management and knowledge, ordered to build [it]," reads the inscription on the madrasah of Mirzo Ulugbek.
In the 17th century, Registan turned into a kind of educational center, where not only citizens, but also immigrants from dozens of Muslim countries of the East studied. During the period of Uzbekistan's independence, reconstruction works were carried out in the square. The results of this reconstruction are presented in this volume.
