Steep stairs rising to the Afrasiab rampart begin to the north of the said aiwan mosque. Westward of the stairs stands one of the most beautiful mausoleums of Shakhi-Zindah. By hypothesis of some researchers, one of Mirzo Ulughbek’s close associates, the astronomer Qazi-zade Rumi was buried here. According to the local tradition, the grave of the Amir Temur's wet nurse (inaga/enaga) – Uljai Khatun and her daughter Bibi Senab was there as well. The mausoleum is two-chambered (a pilgrimage room – ziyarat-khana, and a burial chamber proper). Its entrance is from the southern side. The walls of the commemoration room are designed as wide blind arches. The room is lighted through the arcade built in the high drum. A décor (blue above white) has partially remained on the walls. The panel made of carved six-sided tiles (restored based on the ancient fragments) is placed in the lower part of the walls.
There is a stepped sepulchral construction (saghana) inside the adjoining small burial chamber. The dome of
the burial chamber with a high drum is decorated with multicolored stalactites (muqarnas). The design and décor of the building proper stand out among other famous architectural monuments. The mausoleum
was erected after such world-known constructions of Samarkand as the Bibi-Khanim mosque and Guri-Amir.
Yet neither of these structures has such a dome (more precisely – drum) as the Qazi-Zade Rumi mausoleum under description here. The mausoleum stands at the very foot of the rampart. However, it is so well proportioned that its dome almost levels the mausoleum’s height with the other monuments standing higher.
