A pot vessel found in Dalverzintepa. What makes it unique?

In May of this year, the Dalverzin group of the Art History Expedition of Uzbekistan continued its research in the northern corner of Dalverzintepa.

During the excavations, members of the expedition, researchers of the Institute of Art History of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan O. Aripdjanov and T. Dzhakhanov, managed to find a large ceramic vessel. This was reported by the Academy of Sciences.

In Central Asian archaeology, such vessels were called xum and xumcha. They played an important role in human economic activity and were mainly used for storing liquid and solid substances. Therefore, during archaeological excavations, dozens and hundreds of such vessels were found.

What is the peculiarity of the jug?

  • Firstly, it is decorated with a decor consisting of two rows of zigzag lines. Three horizontal lines are installed on each of the upper and lower rows; below there is another row consisting of unconnected arcs. On opposite sides of the vessel, under the frame, there are two handles and between them two disc-shaped appliqués.
  • The second noteworthy feature of the khum is that you can see two scripts in the Bactrian script, formed on the basis of the Greek alphabet. Inscriptions were also applied to wet clay after decoration. They are located on top of each other, with the upper part consisting of four characters and the lower part of thirteen characters. The records are not yet encrypted.
