Scientist who became ruler at age 15

We know some important facts about patronage of Ulugbek, active until his death in 1449.

Scientist who became ruler at age 15

Born in 1394 in Sultaniya (Iran) he was son of Shahrukh and grandson of Timur and became – very young – governor of Samarkand from 1409 and ruler of the whole Mawarannahr in 1411. Before the building of rasad-khana (observatory) he established a famous madrasa in Samarkand in 1417 – 1420. He was himself very educated, a poet, calligrapher, amateur of mathematics and science and protector of scholars, artists and men of letters.

We know also some works dedicated to Ulugbek3 like the Miftah al-hisab by Ghiyas ad-Din Jamshid Kashani of 1427 in the National Library of Russia or the Ansab-i Mahmudi of Sahhaf Ramaki, or a Treatise about architecture and geometry with designs by Abu l-Vafa Busjani, the Sharh Mujiz Ibn al-Nafis by his physician Burhan ad-Din Ibn Nafis Kirmani completed for him in Samarkand in 841/1436, but many other works remain unidentified until today.

You can learn more about the topic in the book-album "Illustrated manuscripts from Mawarannahr in the collections of France" (Volume XXIX) in the series "The Cultural Legacy of Uzbekistan".
